Almost Decoration Day

Even though I pride myself on having minimal possessions, I still have a lot of stuff. Like three cauldrons. Who, I ask you, needs three cauldrons? No one, that's who. Even so, I'm pretty good at decluttering a space, so much so that I'm frequently called during that fun process known as moving. I'm good with throwing things away, asking the important questions like, Do you really need this rubber decapitated chicken? (True story. Halloween party prop, I suspect, but still -- how many voodoo themed parties can a person have? Maybe four in a lifetime.)

Dear readers, on the eve of Memorial Day, I ask you -- do you throw away or do you hoard? What can you not get rid of? What have you been surprised to find when going through your stuff?

I throw away- my parents hoard! But this weekend we've thrown out so much.. making room for baby.

My mother has some awful addiction to taking in dead relative's furniture, clothing, photographs, appliances...

Let me just say this: Due to the recent water damage in my basement, I've been pitching books, lit mags, and personal papers, and I hate it, hate it, hate it.

The clutter in the house is the old lady's shit. My mind is another matter entirely. She won't throw her shit out and I don't know how to throw mine away.

Why throw it out? You may need that stuff some day... ;-)

I hoard, but I don't let it clutter up the place. If shit starts getting out of control, I chunk it, so I guess I'm kinda "middle of the road", here.

I'm afraid I'm a hoarder. I know of my issue though, and I fight it. Except where books are concerned I can usually keep it under control

Hi Doll, I am definately a "tosser". I abhor clutter and collect nothing but clothes, shoes and purses. Oh, and makeup, art, books, stationary, hats, etc. BUT every 6 months or so, I go thru everything and PURGE. Gotta make way for new shit!

MY GENERATION WS BROUGHT UP ON WASTE NOT, WANT NOT. SO TO THROW SOMETHING OUT IS SO HARD TO DO, THERE JUST HAS TO BE A USE FOR IT. BUT THE DAY WILL COME WHEN THOSE DECISIONS HAVE TO BE MADE OR MAYBE I WILL JUST LET MY KIDS DECIDE AND NOT WORRY ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW.

I sold a Madame Alexander "Cissy" doll dress for $631 on Ebay.
I toted it around for years.
I don't miss it.
I threw away my mothers baby shoe.

when i moved into the bus (natureformandspirit.blogspot.com) i got rid of everything except what could fit in a 6x12' van. i thought it would be a cool idea for a book: how to streamline the moving process by not owning more than can fit in a car. it can be done...if you're extreme and spartan. which i am:)

Michelle,

I guess I'm more of a hoarder, although I've gotten better at getting rid of things.

The things I hoard are books and magazines, and Godzilla-related items...oh, and knives, swords, axes, and other assorted implements of destruction.

What if the shirt said 'thang' instead of 'thing'?

I'm a hoarder, but I'm much more selective than I used to be.

I've been able to purge many books, I've donated piles of comics to the public library, I delete digital images that aren't good, and I don't buy DVD's like I used to.

I have a tin that says Breakfast Club that I won't get rid of. I won't toss out my Vernor's wooden crate.

OH! You know what crap I collect? Wires and cords for computers and stereo equipment. I never throw any of it out and it always comes in handy.
