Full Moon Fever

I've always hated owls and most birds give me the creeps because they fly in your house and steal your soul. Most people are afraid of becoming their mother; I have become my great grandmother. Seriously. She used to throw my one stuffed animal out of our bed (we slept together when I was young because the house didn't have enough rooms), a sweet precursor to Baby Grouchie, a green monster with a yellow felt crown, because he had "bacterias on his head." He'd land Omen-like, impaled on the magazine rack where she stored her National Enquirers. This was back in the day when the Enquirer had great stories like a boy that had ears like a bat (Bat Boy Lives!) instead of stars and their cellulite. Not that stars and their cellulite isn't a great guilty delight, but let's face it, it can't hold a candle to doctored pictures of ordinary people posing as freaks of nature.

Last night, a friend of mine who loves owls and wears them all the time, told me that owls come to you at dark points in your life and lead you out. I started to like them a little more. That sounded good, an animal who comes to you to help you navigate the rough times. I think of life as kind of a constant darkness where you get glimpses of the light to help you along until you make it to the next stop, the next full moon. I've always liked full mooons, the blackness illuminated before it smothers you whole.

Cocktail Hour
Driking cocktail suggestion: Baby Grouchie posed last night in a martini glass (picture soon) to make a Grouchietini. Will post his delightful antics soon.

Benedictions and Maledictions
Happy Friday!

Wild, sexy photo. I even love the grains in it. It's given my day at the office a jolt of mystery.

Michelle,

I've always liked owls, ravens and hawks, and the things they symbolize and the powers they're said to possess...hell, I've got two ravens tattooed on my back, after all. I've always loved the full moon, too.

A pic of you in a graveyard under a full moon? Be still my heart! :)

Would you totally hate it if I ever said "more than one room was too many", and I'd LOVE TO BE "Grouchie" ? LOL !!!

Odd how the brightest person I know is so enamored of the darkness.

I LOVE your blogs. But you mean owls or orbs? I'm also afraid of the dark. Orbs seems to be around in grave yards. I don't go there at night. Brought your posting on some Dutch forums. I cannot wait for your book. Did you read Gramlich's posting on orbs?

The owl is a creature of the dark, and that can make it fearsome.

The birds won't steal your soul if you feed them...promise. ;) I hear you on the full moon, though. I used to treat myself, every October, to spending the full moon night out in nature somewhere. Good memories, those. Some tinges of mystery, awe & even a bit of fear, but an overwhelming sense of being ALIVE!
I really must do that again one of these days.

Beautiful Dark Girl, the photo is beyond. I, too, am fearful of most birds, except Mr. C, our yard cardinal. He is just so beautiful. Only you could get smothered by a moon. xoxo P.S. Rock the teeie, Grouchie! No garbage in mine, tho! xoxo

I didn't give birds a second thought for a long, long time. And then I started collecting hand-carved shore birds, loving their graceful shapes and frozen dignity. I find caged birds disturbing--Nora had two parakeets, a male and a female. The female alternately groomed and tortured the male until she finally killed him. If we had known better, we would have separated them earlier.

Now I rarely let our feeders get empty and spend a lot of time watching hummingbirds outside my window instead of working. Birds are everywhere in my work and my life, now, and it feels richer for it.

I think your friend is right about owls. They'll lead you in silence, which is the way it should be. And it makes sense that they can navigate through the darkness.

I wish someone in my life had read the Nat'l Enquirer--Lucky you! I was stuck with Reader's Digest. Though I'll never forget the story of the girl who was kidnapped and buried alive in a box, with pipe for air. Eeeeeee
