Late

Late

None of us learned sign language even
though my grandmother was nearly
deaf after being boxed in the ears by my
grandfather when she came home too late
from babysitting me. I could hear yelling
through the trailer window, and nobody knew
what to do so we drove away and left her there
with the only man she had ever loved. Even
then, I understood you couldn’t save someone
unless you were willing to crucify yourself.
Our car rolled over the gravel and onto a paved
road that lead us to our house. It wasn’t much,
that house, with its long black bars covering
the windows, part decoration, part prison, but
it was a house, you see, and it didn’t move every
time the weather changed like the trailer did.

  1. Maybe stability isn't such a bad thing after all.

Thought I'd check in and see how you're doing.

  3. Dear Michelle, Poor Grandma--just didn't feel she had any option. Or maybe it just became her "normal". Gramps sounds like a mean 'ol rattlesnake! Your bruises are always so evident! Be careful, Girl. xo

I didn't think it was so funny when A.J. left the SUV I bought him sitting in a pile of leaves that caught the damn car on fire because of the catalytic converter and destroyed the damn thing. Come to think of it, it was kind of funny that the fire interrupted his having sex with his girl friend.--Tony Soprano

  9. The older I get the more I like stability. But I had it as a youngster and that set the tone.
